Dedicated to the people of Australia during their referendum on same-sex marriage.
This project was designed to submit to LoopdeLoop (loopdeloop.org), a bi-monthly contest in which animators from around the world submit short looping animations that follow a prompt. The prompt at the time was “Love is Love,” in an effort to show support for LoopdeLoop participants in Australia, who were facing a country-wide referendum on same-sex marriage.
I was inspired by the charcoal stop-motion works of William Kentridge. I animated in reverse, beginning with the figures together, and once they reached the far edges of the pages, I tore the pages out and photographed them leaving the frame. When played in reverse, it looks like the book is repairing itself and the figures are embracing.
Of the submissions that LoopdeLoop receives for each prompt, they choose the top 100 to be screened in eight cities around the world; I was fortunate enough to have my piece chosen, which can be seen in the official screening compilation that LoopdeLoop posts to Vimeo (see here: https://vimeo.com/245864853).
